Urban Farming: One Way to Solve Hunger?

One novel approach to ending hunger is urban farming. After all, by 2030, 60% of the population in developing countries (those most affected by hunger) is located in urban areas. With this in mind, something that may help combat hunger is urban farming. Urban farming can range anywhere from a small community garden to a large hydroponics system. Interestingly enough, if 10% of the area in cities was dedicated to urban farming, these farms could feed all of the demand for vegetables in the city. Urban farming is definitely worth thinking about when it comes to solving the issue of hunger. Take action! Start a small community garden or research grants to fund a larger operation!

Hunger: A Real Issue in our World

Myself and another FFA member from my chapter had the amazing opportunity to go the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) in Washington D.C. this past summer. We learned many things while we were there, but one thing that stuck with both of us was the issue of hunger in our world. We had a "Poverty Dinner" while at WLC, where we ate as the world eats. The ratios of those of us in the high, middle, and lower classes were astounding. Just to give you an idea, if there are 50 people in a room, 4 would be high class, 8 would be middle class, and 38 would be lower class. This was very eye-opening for myself and the other chapter member, and in an attempt to spread the word about this very real issue in our world, I'm starting a Hunger series on this blog. It's Only a Drop!

Water is a highly valuable resource that is becoming more of a concern as the world population increases. Why is water a concern when there are over 369 quintillion gallons of water on earth? Well picture this: If a gallon jug was representing all the water on earth, fifteen and a half cups of the sixteen contained in the jug would be undrinkable, salty ocean water. Of the remaining half cup that represents all the freshwater on earth, only one drop is fresh surface water like that found in lakes and rivers. Yes, that is only 1 percent of the total fresh water on Earth, or just that one drop! There was some food...or rather WATER... for thought.
